Now any of you that know me should be aware that my favorite GUI is LXDE,and there are quite a few reasons for this,so i will give you some.
In the real world, there are lots of old pc's out there, just being thrown away for no real good reason, some maybe 3 years old, others 10.
but this does not mean that they have no use anymore.
now if you happen to acquire 1 of these machines you can do a lot with them.
If the machine has a reasonable graphics card or chip,we can reuse this as a desktop machine, and apart from say puppy linux, macpup, slitaz and xpud,a distro with lxde will make this machine run faster than **** off a shovel.
That said,do remember that although these distro's work real fast,if you load them with cpu and ram hogging programs,it will bring them down.
which is why you will find when you d/l a distro with LXDE as its gui,you will get the one program, one task setup.
So abiword would be your doc program, gnurmeric for spreadsheets and for music there are lots, all depending on which one you choose.
Some even don't give you anything, just a base, and you add the programs that you want, which is cool for a lot of people.
so don't throw away that old machine you have in the shed, don't just consign that last part exchange you took to the junk heap, use it....
if the machine is even older or does not have a good spec, you can use it as a hardware firewall,a server or lots of other things.
even if it has no hard drive, but say 256mb ram and a cd drive, just chuck in browser linux or webconverger,as they just run from ram.
the possibilities are endless,so before you go to the dump, think first
