Haha ... lol Yeah ... Gnome is my fave of the window managers !!! K.D.E. apps are nice like K3B and Kino and KMPlayer but Gnome is really my fave K.D.E. 4 is just too strange I think . K.D.E. 3.5 is more stable and I just like the G.U.I. better XFCE and Fluxbox followed by E17 are my next faves Although I also like LDE lately So many choices of window managers !!! That's what it's all about in Open Source

Yeah I very much like GUI's hence why GUI is in the site name...

KDE 2.2 was my first favorite Linux GUI... it was very user-friendly back in long gone distros like Lycoris Desktyop/lx

I use GNOME in Ubuntu but I set it up more like the way KDE 2.2/3.5 is... with the taskbar down the bottom.

The new KDE 4 looks nice but the plasma widgets replacing a normal desktop which means you can't put files on the desktop but have to put them into a widget called desktop.... which I think was not even there in the first version...
I also don't like the way the menu works in the new KDE, I like the search, but not how to go back and forward in the menu... it should be a tree view like Vista

Yeah ... I just really don't dig K.D.E. 4 !!! lol Old school K.D.E. BABY !!! lol Started with K.D.E. back in the day and loved it ! Now I can't stand it ! lol Bring back the old K.D.E.

Are you scared that the new Gnome 3.0 will be all new generation like KDE 4.x and thus not as easy to use for people like us who are a bit stuck in our ways

Never scared !!! lol Yeah ... I noticed that it's going in the direction of K.D.E. 4 a bit ... Damn ! Sorry Tim ... Haha ... Well I'm gonna try it out and see if I like it . Why ruin a really nice window manager ? I guess it's in the way you look at it . Maybe the change will be good . Have to wait and see The simplicity of the current Gnome is nice . Fancy shmancy isn't for me . And if it goes too far in that direction I may go to LXDE or XFCE or some other window manager . I like Lubuntu Looks nice and will make a nice addition to the Ubuntu family Time will tell Tim ^_-

do LXDE and XFCE use GTK still? so in a way they are like cut down versions of Gnome?

I think XFCE still uses GTK . Xubuntu uses GTK and in way it's like a smaller version of Gnome . But I don't find Xubuntu a light distro . LXDE has nothing to do with Gnome . I don't think it NEEDS GTK . But there are GTK apps in there . It's a very fast Window Manager and reminds me more of Icewm . Lubuntu should be really awesome once it's out of alpha I know sneekylinux can't wait for it the way he commented on my review on You Tube ! lol People that are disappointed with Xubuntu being SO big should dig Lubuntu

Gnome 3 sounds like it could be cool anytime something new comes out wich is different (even slightly different) people compalin and try to get it banned or removed and form groups against it just becuase if it gets released it might mean they might have to do things a little differently than they used to. Different is not always bad. As long as the apps work I could careless.


AS long as it works I don't care if it's Gnome T1 Trillion... if stuff works on it and I don't got to go through a huge hassle to get apps to load then I'm cool with what ever they choose to change.

We'll maybe see Gnome 3 in Ubuntu 10.10 (perhaps 11.4). There is no way that they can finish it in 2 months (in 8 maybe).

It's supposedly said to be officially released in September of this year. Ubuntu 10.10 releases in late October. I think it WILL have it.

Though, we will have do some smart research when the discussion about 10.10 starts. There's not much of a gap between the releases, so the final beta for 10.10 will go thru serious testing.

As far as i am aware,gnome will no way be finished in time for 10.04,in the alpha's they have kept to the original as far as i can see,but the boot time is quicker.
as for lxde,it has the gtk+2 libs,and is probebly the fastest of the wm's we have in linux today,and i must say it is my fave for the lighter distro's.

I have been successful in doing a online upgrade from Karmic to Lucid Lynx on my EeePC 1001HA

The Gnome Netbook Remix interface that is available in Ubuntu 10.04 is very nice

Sounds nice, how did you du the update from karmic to lucid? thinking about duing the same thing

in terminal/console or alt+f2 type in: update-manager -d
and follow the prompts

but be warned 50% of the time it will screw up the system or you may find not all your hardware works as well in lucid yet...

i think im gonna take backup first: P then i give it a try
