Linux MintClement Lefebvre has announced the release of Linux Mint 7: "The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 7 'Gloria'. The 7th release of Linux Mint comes with numerous bug fixes and a lot of improvements. In particular the menu system, the application manager and the upload manager now provide new features such as 'Suggestions', 'Featured applications', 'SCP and SFTP support'. The underlying base of the operating system was also strengthened with a new adjustment mechanism which makes Linux Mint more robust and less vulnerable to Ubuntu package upgrades, and the introduction of virtual and meta packages which simplify upgrade paths and the installation of multiple desktop environments." Here is the full release announcement and features overview for a detailed list of new features and screenshot. Download (MD5) either the standard of the "Universal" edition (with extensive language support, but without proprietary drivers or media codecs): LinuxMint-7.iso (697MB, torrent), LinuxMint-7-Universal.iso (1,375MB, torrent).

Linux Mint is an operating system for personal computers, focusing on elegance. While Mint is mostly based on (and compatible with) Ubuntu, the design of the user interface is considerably different. Design differences include:

  • A distinct user interface, including a simplified bootloader, desktop layout, theme, and the custom Mint menu.
  • A strong focus on full functionality out of the box (E.g.: Wireless drivers included, plugins required to play common media formats installed by default, screen resolution automatically set, etc.).
  • The Mint Tools, a collection of system tools designed to make system management and administration easier for end users.

Linux Mint is available for download in the form of ISO images, which can be used to create Live CDs or Live USBs. The latter can be created either manually or using UNetbootin.

Getting Started with Linux Mint

This is my second article aimed at new users of the Linux Mint distribution. My first article is on installing a dual-boot setup with Linux Mint and Windows XP. In this article, I would like to talk you through some basic things one should know about using Linux Mint, and generally just help you be productive in your new OS environment. I am going to direct my articles toward a single home PC connected to the Internet, with multiple users.

Although the desktop environment in modern day Linux is intuitive and more or less easy to navigate through, for someone coming from Windows XP, we must keep in mind that the two OSs are different at the 'roots', even though at the surface they may seem similar. At first, the way somethings are done in Linux might seem quirky.
