Subject: [Solved] Linux Mint 9 64bit Sound Stops Working - by: Crank

Hi Tim,

I was finally able to register here. I had only been getting partial page loads for days but it finally worked today. I PM'd Tim about this a few days ago and he was very nice and responded to my question even though he prefers tech support questions to be addressed on this forum. Thanks Tim for your help and being such a nice guy

So I thought I would recipricate and post the question and solution here. So here it is as I also posted it on the mint forum but recieved no response before I figured it out..

[Solved] Sound Stops Working Upon Reboot
by crankster on Sun Sep 05, 2010 6:20 pm

I just started using Mint 9 a few months ago and I think its great however I am having a sound issue that I cant resolve. I am dual booting mint with Vista. When I do a fresh install and update everything works great for a period of time and all of a sudden after a boot up I have no more sound. I have no sound anywhere, MP3s, Movies, Youtube, nothing. I did a clean install last night and it was fine but when I turned it on today there was no sound. This is the 3rd time this has happened. I only installed a few additional programs, Keepassx, Ubuntu Tweak, VLC & Chromium. Other than that it is a clean mint install.

In sound preferences the hardware for output is a CA0106 Sound blaster (Audigy) with a profile of Analog Stereo Duplex.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks :

SOLUTION BELOW

Well, I feel like a complete newbie and I apologize for not finding this solution sooner. I did a search but failed to completely read the the "Forum Rules" in the big pink box at the top of the page. Anyway after returning to the forum rules and trying a few more of the suggestions I finally found the appropriate solution was to install "Gnome Alsa Mixer" from the Synaptic Package Manager AND to uncheck the first check box at the bottom of the page titled "IEC958".

This appeared to completely solve the problem with the Sound Blaster Audigy sound card.

Thanks all. I absolutely love Mint and I am thrilled to be able to use this outstanding product.

Again, Thanks Tim for responding to my problem. Keep up the good work!

Hello,
I once again have a newbie question. I've noticed that sometimes when you are downloading something, it sometimes doesn't install it automatically. Sometimes it will finish downloading and then when I double click on it, it opens a bunch of files. My question is, what do I do from there? I know that sometimes you have to enter in commands into the terminal and such. Thanks!
Subject: Mint 9 KDE 64 bit install - by: riao

My original install of Linux Mint 9 was the Gnome version, which I then installed KDE to be able to try out both. I upgraded to KDE 4.5, which I found somewhat buggy (it would crash every now and again; not that often, but enough to make me want to go back to 4.4.5).

This whole Linux experiment had been just that for me up until now.. a hopeful experiment to avoid paying the high costs of Windows again once upgrading became necessary. So with this, I ended up deciding to download the Mint 9 KDE version and just start fresh. So I did this and chose to wipe the drive and completely reinstall.

It's been a couple of hours since I did this and have been trying to solve xorg crashes, network crashes, the inability to download Nvidia drivers (cannot fetch for some reason)... WOW. Did the reinstall 2x but no improvement.

I'm now downloading Kubuntu 10.04 in hopes that Mint just completely borked their KDE release. If not I guess I'll just have to go back to Mint 9 Gnome and redownload KDE on top.

In case the inability to download the Nvidia drivers is not the fault of Mint, does any know where I can manually download them in a .deb?

You know, I used to love KDE3....I used to use it avidly, but I realize its not exactly practical to use it any more so I switched back to GNOME.

Basically, what I hate the most in KDE4 is the desktop folder widget things...how do I make it so I just have a desktop that I have icons on etc? Instead of this overdone ass-hattery that is desktop folders? lol

Subject: Mint 9 Gnome With Kubuntu KDE backport - by: Moderate

Hey everyone, fairly new to the whole Linux distro scene.

I got a problem, I'm running Mint 9 Gnome, but in Tim's latest review

It shows him running Mint 9, but looks like Kubuntu 10 KDE. I was just wondering how to do this, because I think I want to stay with Mint, but I like the way Kubuntu KDE looks. Also, any other pointers and tips for a noob with Mint and Linux in general would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Subject: Mounted smb share in fstab - by: riao

Hello. I have a question that I hope someone might be able to answer.

I've just entered a couple of lines into /etc/fstab to mount a couple smb shares at boot. here are the lines:

//192.168.0.106/storage   /home/riao/mnt/storage   cifs   username=***,password=***,_netdev,uid=client_user,gid=users   0 0
//192.168.0.106/audio   /home/riao/mnt/audio   cifs   username=***,password=***,_netdev,uid=client_user,gid=users   0 0

It does the job; the shares are mounted to the correct location and everything, but my network seems to be going completely ape-shit right now. Actually my linux box is downloading and the windows machine is uploading -- at nearly the maximum capacity of my network. Is the linux box just downloading everything from the share? What can I do to prevent this?

EDIT:

Okay what I've done now is to comment out one of the shares (storage) as it's 400+ GB and I didn't want to wait for that to pass through the network. The audio share is a little under 40 GB.

I noticed that even though it certainly appears that I'm d'loading Gig after Gig, the open space on my HDD is not changing. It's remaining at a steady 308.6 GB free. So is it some kind of indexing?

Anyway I'm going to just let it go waiting until the 40 Gig mark has passed. If the network calms down, I'll reboot and see what happens then.

Subject: grub buisness - by: wallybescotty

ok im doing a duel boot, i had windows 7 on one HDD and linux mint 9 on another, it was working good, i was having a problem where everytime i pushed the A key on my keyboard thunderbird would pop up and the linux os would freeze, turns out it was my keybaord not the linux.

anyway i deleted the linux and everyone in one forum wigglez was reading said install the linux without the win HDD hooked up so i did, and it worked right after swapping keyboards, but then when i hooked the windows HDD up it weent to grub rescue, i forgot to delete the grub first

anyway i did a ( bootsect /nf60 c: /mbr ) and it fixed the windows. only now windows loads before the grub if i hit esc and go to boot priority and click the linux drive it loads perfect with the grub and the windows option works and everything.

anyone know how i can get the grub to load before the windows lol ive been up since yesturday and i have to finish all this tonight before i take my computer back home. i dont have internet at the moment hollar as soon as you can i'll be up till i figure it out, i was thinking maybe just reinstall the grub or swap the sata cables what does everyone thing?

ok i fixed it, everything is all good now, i did a sudo update-grub2 and then on my restart i went into my bios and found where i could change the loading priority of the HDDs so it works the way it should now lol hello mint 9

Subject: Steam Games - by: dupasqk

Hey guys I'm new to linux, I have linux mint 9 RC 64 bit installed on a Quad 9750 with 12 GB ram. nVidia 8800 GTS Graphics card.

I am wanting to play all those fun steam games without the windows garbage.

I have installed the recomended restricted driver for my graphics card.

I have steam running through wine-doors and have a few games installed. The shortcuts on the desktop won't work, sais they are untrusted, and none of them are in working order yet.

Here are my steam related questions:

1.) Is this driver going to be good enough to play the high detail games?
2.) How do I make the shourcuts trusted?
3.) Is steam going to be realesed for linux so we don't need to run it with wine?
4.) I have crossover games for linux trial, can steam work in that?

Thanks in advance guys!

ok, i had ubuntu 9.10 but i realised that i wanted some of mints features so i get Linux mint now through a series of endeavours lol but i was wondering, im not sure if i will even attempt it or not, but is there a update to KDE 4.4 from Linux mint, and if so would i keep the programs and dvd library and all the wine program i installed? just wondering, if not its cool, i was just wondering for some reason mint just works best for me lol, i get things to install fast and easier than ubuntu 9.10 and its really strange because mint was build off of it, i don't know maybe its me, also how do you change the login background, it used to be a GDM and i used to know how to make them, but 9.10 and mint 8 don't use them im told, and is there ways to customise the loading screen, what's that called bootspash or usplash? anyway just hit me up whenever i finally have a Linux that works, and instead of messing with wine i was thinking about just installing a virtual machine for 3 games lol fable, batman, and doom 3, i dont want to get a new dvd of doom, plus i have a modd from a friend of mine that i know exactly how to put it in windows. so im going to be experimenting with virtual box, im used to vmwear on windows hopefully this works as good.

and thanks for the tech support from Tim and everybody else i know i ask alot of questions also thanks for having patients

While you wait for Mint to load, there is a Mouse "Waiting" Cursor with two spheres that orbit each other. What theme is it using? It looks a lot better than the "Default" ubuntu cursor.

Hi Tim & All,

As a total newbie, I have been putting off all level 4 & 5 updates including the Kernel, basically out of fear, yep, fear .having spent so many hours configuring, customizing & tweaking, learning, getting to know etc..and having read so many horror stories of broken systems and errors after applying these deeper level updates on numerous Linux forums, I just didn't want a broken system

However, I waited for the right mood swing and threw caution to the wind, went hell for leather, ticked & applied every single one of the sons a bitches .......EVERYTHING went perfect, not one error, I rebooted several times, used every app, played every type of media all perfect.........installed Ubuntu Tweak and got rid of the old Kernel and cleaned out all caches etc.........I now have a perfect running system, as before..........

..I feel I am a true Samurai, a Keyboard Cowboy, a Linux Warrior thru & thru!!!! ...........

Subject: When, if at all, should the Kernel be updated? - by: icekool

Hi all,

Having read on the Mint forums a few posts about some security vulnerabilites found within the kernel with recommendations to update/upgrade to at least 2.6.31-19.56 or newer, I would like to ask about how important this is as I fully realise that a kernel update is a serious thing and can seriously break a system.

In the Mint update manager these updates are no doubt level 5 updates, which for a total newbie like myself, concern me and I would rather NOT update unless very necessary.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from experienced Linuxers about how often or under what circumstances you update the kernel & also which versions you would choose as there seem to be quite a lot of very recent version numbers.

Thanks

Subject: Linux Mint 8 - ZSNES I can't install?(solved) - by: myspacecommassergio

ok in the packadge manager it shows up with a yellow box where you would normally tick it for install.

I tick it for install and a box immediately pops up saying install ZSNES when ever I click install the system freezes for maybe about a milisecond... ok fine but guess what? Nothing installs.

**Note**

It asks me to install before hitting the "APPLY" button. I can't mark it for instalation I check GAMES and its not there. I open terminal and I type "zsnes" to see if it will start the emulator and no such command.

I love emulators man why wont it work? :/

PS

If you know good emulators for linux recomend them please I love those things!
Subject: Recommended Partition Setup for upgrading? - by: myspacecommassergio

What would be a good partition set up for upgrading?

Swap I know should be around the size of my ram or double

Home should be the biggest (right?) since it will contain alot of my personal files(music movies documents for openoffice.org).

I was wondering TIM and forum posters, as experienced Ubuntu/Linux Mint users what would you recommend?

I've never technically updgraded before and I hear it's mega risky to upgrade your OS through the update tool. In linux Mint (wich is a variant of ubuntu i guess) how would I be able to set up my next install so that I don't have to recopy all my files and so that I can KEEP MY APPLICATIONS so I don't have to spend time and bandwidth redownloading them and the games I downloaded(if that's at all possible)?

Please let me know.

My Goal is to install over OLD versions of MINT so that I can get a NEW version through the ISO(not updating) to start error free and fresh but with all my applications and personal data files in the OS when I boot in for the first time.

for example
Linux Mint 8 upgrade via Live CD - > Linux Mint 9 and I want to keep everything apps, home folder, EVERYTHING except the obsolete/older/less supported version of Linux Mint but still keep the files apps games and everything I've downloaded. I think you understand what I mean right? lol
Subject: MadWifi Compile / Instalation help - by: myspacecommassergio

Ok so I have a computer with Atheros Wireless.

The wireless works but I need to patch it regardless so that it can work PROPERLY with my switch and for other reasons as well I need madwifi.

The wireless is always on and I can't turn it off no matter if the switch is in the off position. I don't like that becuase the wireless keeps trying to connect to all these acess points when ever I turn on the PC.

I think it's a cool feature I can see why Linux does that (to save you time) but sometimes it's annoying other times it helps to auto connect so don't confues it for a rant.

So how do I go about doing this?

I have Linux Mint

I downloaded Madwifi tar gz file from Madwifi.org I belive (google it it may have been written wrong).

According to the files it says "Make install"

I type that and I'm getting error messages telling me no destination or something so it cannot install.

I know I'm doing this wrong...

I downloaded via terminal - linux source

and a whole bunch of other stuff I got all desperate and downloaded a bunch of stuff that was in madwifi tutorials. LOL

So... about this "make install" or "Make" to compile the source code/madwifi i donwloaded how do i go about doing this?

I got to get this Atheros working! that way my wireless card can get patched and stuff. I need madwifi so I'm not going to use the other windows driver tool (indiswrapper?).

Madwifi is what i need. Teach me how to "$ make" compile madwifi via the terminal etc etc! Everything I belive is downloaded. I just got to compile it all so my wireless can work properly. Thanks

Sorry for the mispelling as I'm sort of in a jip over the internet issue in Linux so I'm currently booted into Windows and I don't have every name on hand to type it correctly(i did it all to the best of my knowledge wich isn't that well).
it would be nice if someone could tell me how to configure my dual screens. my desktop is gnome. i heard that kde is easier to set up another display. each display i have, is on a separate graphics card. the primary card is my ati radeon 7000, and my secondary is some kind of matrox graphics. i wonder if theres even a graphics driver for that, because my secondary screen is blank.

Subject: A question re setting up a dual boot system - by: icekool

Hi Tim and everyone

I recently viewed your "upgrading from Vista & installing Mint into a dual boot system" vid and would like to ask you (as a total newbie to Linux), if I install MInt as per your vid, ie. straight from the CD on an existing Vista machine, what will happen to my existing bootloader/bootstrap??, will it be replaced by GRUB?, I ask this because I do want a dual boot system but would also like to keep the existing default windows bootloader in place, in fact I want to keep Vista as the default OS categorically (at least until I get to know Mint well enough).

I guess what I really want to know before taking the plunge, is how to install Mint on it's own partition but WITHOUT messing up my Vista system in anyway whatsoever.

This may come as a surprise to many Linux users but I have never had a freeze, hang, crash or any problem with my current Vista setup, I have also taken many months of deleting unecessary startups, background services, and tweaking the registry and regularly cleaning out junk, temp files etc.. so as you can imagine, I do NOT want to alter this particular setup of Vista, but I am very keen to learn Linux Mint and do want a dual boot.

Any replies greatly appreciated

Hey. Could someone tell me how to make a bootable Mint Live CD? I'm interested in trying out the OS, and I'm not quite sure on how to make a Live CD for it. Could someone make a video or reply here with information on how to do it?

Subject: Format Windows and install Linux Mint? - by: bp96

I want to format my Windows (7) partition and overwrite it with Linux Mint. I do not want to format the whole hard drive because I have two backup partitions that have my user files in. I just want to delete the Windows partition and put Linux Mint onto it. I don't want a dual boot. Is this possible and if so, how can I do it?

Subject: Compiz under Linux Mint - by: EdgyRootStudios

Hey guys, I am experiencing the following problem:

I like to use Compiz' zoom function for my screencasts, just like Tim does. It did work all the time perfectly fine - until I installed some packages for my ATI video card. After that no zoom and apparently no other effects are working.
I will now go for a complete re-installation of Compiz, but if that doesn't work, I'd be glad if you got some advice.

The packages that supposedly broke Compiz:
envyng-core
envyng-qt
fglrx-amdcccle

Btw, do you use zoom or enhanced zoom? Somehow I don't see much of a difference there.

Thanks,
Edgy
