i asked Tim earlier, but i was just wondering what everyone else thinks, is there a good program out there that changes usplash, "the loading up to linux" i installed the KDE GUI and now it took over my linux mint loading screen and says kubuntu now and i want the linux mint one back, without losing the KDE choice in the login, so if anyone has a suggestion hollar at me.

oh yeah... to get surround sound working in linux you often have to check and change a few settings in the Volume Controls or PulseAudio manager...

oh okay cool - it can takes years of convincing to switch some - you just gotta always show them how your linux systems run so much better and how you can do all the same things and they will turn around one day even if it takes 5 more years it will happen

Hello, sorry to resurrect a dead thread... having the same problem though. I too just installed KDE and while I thought it was really cool.. very easy to change the look of everything, add transparencies and all, I switched back to Gnome as I just found it responds better and uses less resources. And, honestly I find it easier on the eyes... less cluttered actually.

But that's neither here there; I have the same issue with the loading screen, and the Startup manager doesn't affect it. The startup manager seems to be for the Grub loader and doesn't allow for background image selection anyway. I'm guessing that I might have to do this without the gui? I mean this obviously doesn't really affect anything performance-wise, but it would be cool to change it.

Thanks.

Hello, sorry to resurrect a dead thread...

Who's complaining?

You said the Startup Manager didn't affect it but when I had this problem it worked for me...Here's what I did to change the Kubuntu usplash to the original Linux Mint usplash:
1. Open up StartUp-Manager (that's the exact name- don't get it confused with Startup Applications)
2. Click the Appearance tab
3. Next to 'Usplash theme,' click on the dropdown menu and change it (from usplash-theme-kubuntu or whatever it is) to 'usplash-theme-mint'

Hope this helps!

Hm. I don't see an appearance tab. this is what I see:

I was actually able to get rid of the kde splash by removing the plymouth kde theme in the software manager, but it would still be nice to select whatever image I liked. For now It's defaulted back to the Mint loading screen.

Thanks for the quick reply, BTW

Well if you have Nvidia Drivers enabled there is a bug where you probably will NOT even see the splash during boot, I never do anymore...

thanks for taking the time to share that screenshot with us

also note that the tick box for Show boot splash is UnTicked

The new boot splash system called plymouth is made by fedora, new and extremely buggy, I wish they had left it be with the older system that used to work.

You're welcome

That's wierd- this is what mine looks like:

Screenshot.png

Oh I see now- you're using the built in StartUp-Manager in Mint 9 whilst I'm using the StartUp-Manager which I manually installed in Mint 8 LOL

If you want that tab, then I think you should install the startupmanager package in Synaptics Package Manager or reinstall it if it's already installed.

If you don't know how to do that, then feel free to ask- that's what we're here for! ;)

@Tim
LOL you posted when I was typing

Yes Mint 8 does not use plymouth the new splash buggy system which Mint 9 does use, thats the difference

Hey thanks to both for the updates! I don't think I'll be reinstalling the startup manager as, from what Tim is saying, it probably won't do any good as Mint 9 uses a different system than Mint 8. I DID however find where the images are stored.. What I'll see if I can do is replace the screen used as the loading screen with one of my selection... I'll let you know how it goes.

EDIT.. Ah nevermind... it wasn't actually the location of the image file, but the location of the "free to elegance" image and the dots. So you can make those dots be whatever you want.. lol... maybe I'll make them into a little pac-man eating power pellets....

Well I think I've had enough playing with that.. lol. It actually worked, in that when the PC is shutting down it actually shows pac-man eating the pellets. I couldn't get it to work when it was loading. anyway, for anyone concerned the files are located here: /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ sudo is required to make any changes.

still cannot change the background image though...
