Subject: [Solved] Linux Mint 9 64bit Sound Stops Working - by: Crank

Hi Tim,

I was finally able to register here. I had only been getting partial page loads for days but it finally worked today. I PM'd Tim about this a few days ago and he was very nice and responded to my question even though he prefers tech support questions to be addressed on this forum. Thanks Tim for your help and being such a nice guy

So I thought I would recipricate and post the question and solution here. So here it is as I also posted it on the mint forum but recieved no response before I figured it out..

[Solved] Sound Stops Working Upon Reboot
by crankster on Sun Sep 05, 2010 6:20 pm

I just started using Mint 9 a few months ago and I think its great however I am having a sound issue that I cant resolve. I am dual booting mint with Vista. When I do a fresh install and update everything works great for a period of time and all of a sudden after a boot up I have no more sound. I have no sound anywhere, MP3s, Movies, Youtube, nothing. I did a clean install last night and it was fine but when I turned it on today there was no sound. This is the 3rd time this has happened. I only installed a few additional programs, Keepassx, Ubuntu Tweak, VLC & Chromium. Other than that it is a clean mint install.

In sound preferences the hardware for output is a CA0106 Sound blaster (Audigy) with a profile of Analog Stereo Duplex.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks :

SOLUTION BELOW

Well, I feel like a complete newbie and I apologize for not finding this solution sooner. I did a search but failed to completely read the the "Forum Rules" in the big pink box at the top of the page. Anyway after returning to the forum rules and trying a few more of the suggestions I finally found the appropriate solution was to install "Gnome Alsa Mixer" from the Synaptic Package Manager AND to uncheck the first check box at the bottom of the page titled "IEC958".

This appeared to completely solve the problem with the Sound Blaster Audigy sound card.

Thanks all. I absolutely love Mint and I am thrilled to be able to use this outstanding product.

Again, Thanks Tim for responding to my problem. Keep up the good work!

I posted a while back about me getting a new laptop, and I finally decided to install Linux Mint KDE 9. It works great except for one exception. When ever I visit a website with audio, for example listen.grooveshark.com the audio will not play.
I have tried it under different web browsers, Firefox and Chromium, but it will not let me listen to the audio. I am not sure if this is just an issue with KDE, and its sound system Phonon, but it works just fine when I Had ubuntu on it with Gnome.

Also the movie title appears on the desktop and when I click on it, it just opens up a file with the following icons on it.....Audio_TS, Common, Video _TS, win, autorun,INF, disc ID, istall.exe, Readme.txt.

The other day I accidentally hit the disable track pad button. I don't think I have ever hit it on purpose. But it crashed my track pad and now the pointer is frozen unless I use another mouse attached via usb. I have two users set up and the other user is fine. just the user I crashed it on is broken. It also seems to mess up gnome sometimes too. Just now I was not able to use the other mouse to open any tabs or menu buttons. I just had to do a hard reboot and use my other user to get here to ask this question.

Anyone faced the problem, or know of it? Have any tips on fixing it?
Hello,
I once again have a newbie question. I've noticed that sometimes when you are downloading something, it sometimes doesn't install it automatically. Sometimes it will finish downloading and then when I double click on it, it opens a bunch of files. My question is, what do I do from there? I know that sometimes you have to enter in commands into the terminal and such. Thanks!
I just installed Ubuntu 10.4 and I'm a new user to linux. I am a beginner at everything so please be patient with me. I have searched hi and low for a solution to my wireless problem but have had no luck. I downloaded the suggested drivers, which one included the broadcom sta wireless driver. But after installing it , it worked fine for a day but when I turned on the computer the next day, there were no wireless networks available and when I looked under Hardware drivers, it showed the driver being installed but it said, "the driver is activated but not currently in use". Would you have any suggestions? Thanks

Hey everyone,

i dont really like lubuntu, and want to put linux mint 9 on the machine instead.

So right now its dual booted. I just want to know how to install linux mint 9 to over write lubuntu without damaging XP?

BTW, there are 2 physical hdds in the machine, and xp takes up one, lubuntu takes up the other. Also, will grub be uninstalled / replaced?

I assume i just tell mint 9 to use the partition lubunut is on, but dunno if that will delete grub and install a new grub.

Thanks

Subject: Mint 9 KDE 64 bit install - by: riao

My original install of Linux Mint 9 was the Gnome version, which I then installed KDE to be able to try out both. I upgraded to KDE 4.5, which I found somewhat buggy (it would crash every now and again; not that often, but enough to make me want to go back to 4.4.5).

This whole Linux experiment had been just that for me up until now.. a hopeful experiment to avoid paying the high costs of Windows again once upgrading became necessary. So with this, I ended up deciding to download the Mint 9 KDE version and just start fresh. So I did this and chose to wipe the drive and completely reinstall.

It's been a couple of hours since I did this and have been trying to solve xorg crashes, network crashes, the inability to download Nvidia drivers (cannot fetch for some reason)... WOW. Did the reinstall 2x but no improvement.

I'm now downloading Kubuntu 10.04 in hopes that Mint just completely borked their KDE release. If not I guess I'll just have to go back to Mint 9 Gnome and redownload KDE on top.

In case the inability to download the Nvidia drivers is not the fault of Mint, does any know where I can manually download them in a .deb?

Hey all

This thread is regarding my second B-Side Bonus channel.... It recently got more than a thousand subscribers so I applied for YouTube Partnership on it and was approved...

www.youtube.com/user/OSyTim

Total Upload Views: 64,119
Subscribers: 1,026

YouTube Partnership for OSyTim has just been accepted YaY

Thank You to everyone who helped by subscribing to it and watching the crazy videos on it

I have been in the process of cleaning up that channel by trying to do the following;
- replacing the old linux tutorials with new versions on the main channel then deleting old videos from it - they are still on blip.tv
- removed the crap videos out of it
- i still need to fix the channel up with the new branding features that are available as a partner

- btw, I deleted & closed down the GiantFurryClam GFC channel I was doing with that woman... long story but she was a cow to me a few times and I asked her to apologizes to me for the last bitchiness and she refused so I withdraw all my support for her including the free work I had done for her online

Subject: AMD's Bulldozer Architecture Preview: New from the - by: OSGUItech

Hi All

AMD has released details for the next generation CPU to replace the current Architecture

More info: www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=985

this is why I am not sad I did not buy the hex core that quids got... hehe because in 6 months we will have a new better version of all the chips

Wow I just found the POLL button in the new forum software YAY

Also in the news is the fact AMD is going to run another line of CPU's for Mobile Devices, to compete with Intel Atom & ARM chips for things like ePads = YAY

Subject: My attempt to do a reinstall in less than 1 hour - by: quids

Some people see it as a huge issue that every six months you need to do a complete system rebuild with Ubuntu.
Well of course that isn't true - LTS versions last 3 years, or you can use Update Manager to upgrade to a new version of Ubuntu.

But then some people say its better to do a complete rebuild.
Take your pick either way is good.

Since I recently screwed up my system (totally self inflicted cos I was bored and in a tinkering mood) I decided to see if it was possible to take a damaged version of Lucid and do a complete reinstall keeping with Lucid in less than one hour

Well before starting I knew I was on to loosing fight, the data transfer at 3Gb a min was going to take at least 40 mins.

But anyway heres what I did

Prep work
Take a backup of all .deb cache files using AptOnCD (Which I forgot to do)
Take a copy of package list: dpkg --get-selections > mypackages.txt
Copy all /home to External HDD
Copy /usr/local to External HDD
Sync some config files with Ubuntu One

The Install
18:20 With Live CD Clear /home out of everything except Documents, Pictures, Downloads, Music, Videos. Then run install
18:35 Install complete
Set update server location
Download AptOnCD, then restore all packages (with a month old file cos I forgot to take a newer copy)
Update Kernel
18:50 Kernel update complete
Install Nvidia Driver and copy over config files from external HDD to /home
18:55 Graphics driver complete
Install Ubuntu Tweak
Run remaining updates (here I notice my ISP has throttled my bandwidth to half speed cos Im over monthly limit)
Use Tweak beta to restore GNOME settings - FAILED and screwed up display, theme settings, and App menu
19:15 Updates complete
19:20 Fixed Tweaks screwups
Restore package list: sudo dpkg --set-selections < mypackages.txt
Install all packages: sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade
This came up with 10 packages to upgrade, 345 to install. Need 300Mb of 2100Mb
Copied /usr data back while it downloaded packages
19:50 Package install complete
19:55 /usr data copy complete
20:15 Finished sorting out App Menu and installed Google Earth, Gens, and VBox which couldn't be installed from package list

Ok so I failed on one hour, but I did it in 1:55

Lessons Learnt
If I had taken a backup with AptOnCD I would have saved ~400Mb of downloads
Should have copied more config files to Ubuntu one, it was very fiddly putting them all back in.
Should have done all this before blowing through my ISP download limit
Don't use Ubuntu Tweak backup until its out on the Stable release
Doing the package list backup was brilliant and saved a huge amount of work

If I had done that right I reckon that would have been a system rebuild in 1:30
Quite a lot less than a Windows system rebuild

Hi im Carl from North Wales U.K

First of all i got to say thanks to Tim Osgui for tutorials & some others for all the help on you-tube you helped me a lot.
i got to say iv always been a big windows fan in the past but now iv seen the light and hope the change of OS really dose work out for me im using Ubuntu 10.04 @ the moment & very happy with it. How i come about Ubuntu was i got the wife Acer aspire one 110L 2 years back with limpus lite. When i first seen it i thought what the f**k is this. Found out it was Linux but the wife was happy with it. So i started looking up Linux stuff & tweaked the little net-book for her needs. Then i seen Ubuntu on you-tube for it but she had none of it she was happy with limpus so i left it @ that. Anyway about 4 month back the little limpus crashed big time hahaha so i put Ubuntu on it for her but then i needed to learn about it myself so if any thing went wrong i could fix it for her. And that was it i started to love messing around with it. So i thought i put it on my comp see if it is any better than window xp. Tried it for about a month loving it more & more then thought im keeping this baby as my mane OS formatted the HDD & never looked back. I've also tried out Kubuntu and Linux Mint but like Ubuntu more. So any-ways that me for now.

big thank to you Tim & some others like Linux4UnMe on you-tube & good old sneekylinux‬‎ on you-tube & many more you-tube Linux Subscriptions iv got

keep up the good work u lads are doing

Application Config Locations in Ubuntu, most of these are not version specific and can probably be safely copied over when upgrading Ubuntu.
You could also sync with Ubuntu One to get the same settings copied over to multiple computers. (Its not a good idea to sync Firefox, Seamonkey, Chrome, or Chromium with Ubuntu One as these browsers store a lot of cached data.)

For newbies: ~/ refers to /home/YourUserName and a dot at the beginning means its a hidden folder press Ctrl+H to show them in Nautilus.
Dont want to get into a debate on policies but though might as well ask.

I am thinking of voting for the greens but not totally made up my mind.

I like there ideas on transport and they support labors brooadband plan.

Quote from The Australian Greens website:
The Greens back Labor's National Broadband Network which can deliver dedicated broadband speeds of one thousand megabits per second to 93% of the population. Whereas the Coalition can only promise that same 93% that their broadband speeds will be no worse than a peak speed of 12 megabits per second. I put on the record here that the Greens will also move to prevent the future privatisation of the NBN without an act of Parliament.

What are your thoughts and who you going to vote for.

Subject: Can you please review Mephisto Backup v1.12? - by: rusher81572

G'day,

I was wondering if you could review my program on your show. It is imaging software for Linux. GUI and CLI.

code.google.com/p/mephistobackup/

This program can do simple backups and syncs over a network or locally. It uses tar and rsync in the background. Mephisto Backup was made with the Java programming language. The key feature of this program is the ability to backup your system to an image and copy it to a Linux Live DVD for future restoration. The user can then take that cd and move his or her system to any PC.
Basically, what I hate the most in KDE4 is the desktop folder widget things...how do I make it so I just have a desktop that I have icons on etc? Instead of this overdone ass-hattery that is desktop folders? lol

Subject: I have been everywhere and no one can help me - by: joejo

I recently installed Linux Mint 9 onto an external hard drive (hitachi 250gb). The whole shawbam was made way for Linux Mint 9 (its ok i have four externals and that one I used for this experiment) and the install went better than perfect...I was actually surprised. But, anyway, I finish the install and restarted my laptop and for some reason it went straight into my Windows. So, i restarted and went to the BIOS screen, looked around and couldnt find USB boot...Just HDD and CD/DVD. OK, i am not discouraged yet...So, yet again i restart and hold ESC and pull up another boot option screen, I find the Hitachi external and excitedly highlight it and press enter.....Then I was sad....Screen was just black with a blinking underscore. I decided to go to the Linux Mint forum, no one answered me, I try the IRC chats, no one wants to help...its weird. I come to you for some help and insight. I think, through troubleshooting, its a problem with the GRUB because I went through the same process on a different laptop and this time a command prompt with some things mentioning GRUB came up. So i download SuperGRUBdisk2 and booted with it, what happened was it pulled up a GRUB menu and the first thing on the menu was Ubuntu GNU/Linux. I was pretty surprised by this, I highlighted and pressed enter and nothing happened, just the blank screen and the underscore. I couldnt figure out what the problem was, so i figured i would download Puppy Linux, put on a thumb drive and try. So, thats what I did and I had to use the popup boot menu again, I found the thumb drive, highlighted it and pressed enter and it booted into Puppy Linux. Any advice to make this work would be really cool, I have seen people boot from an external before.

Subject: Kdenlive Codecs - by: riao

This is going to sound weird, but I've never actually completed a project with Kdenlive. I've played with it, watched the results in the preview window to make sure I could use it easily if I ever did wish to create a video.. but never actually rendered anything.

Okay well now I've actually completed a project. Bet when I go to select a format to encode with, I get messages like "Unsupported video codec: libxvid" with the option to select it in the menu "greyed out" so to speak. Yet I'm sure that the codec is installed. I checked in synaptic to be sure.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Heres a couple of pages I spotted on OMG Ubuntu
Changing Splash Screen

If anyone tries them let us know how it goes please?
Not really much point in me trying them cos the splash screen lasts less than 2 secs on my computer

Subject: Trying out Fedora 13... - by: drsunnz

Finally have the time to decide to try out Fedora 13 after running Ubuntu 10.04 on my MBP for 3 months.

First impressions...

The same

Many things are the same as Ubuntu, ext4 default file system with optional encryption, newish kernel, gnome, firefox, and other software. Wireless things like WiFi and bluetooth work out of the box. It worked with my 802.11n 5Gz WiFi with Chinese SSID!!

The bad

Installing Fedora 13 on a Mac is much more troublesome than Ubuntu 10.04 though. I think it is due to Fedora's ability to actually understand EFI/GPT and natively boot from it, but Mac hardware try to be too smart that emulate BIOS/MBR stuff for any non-Apple OS and prevents Fedora 13 from booting when it is installed!!!

But no worries somebody did found a way around it: blog.christophersmart.com/2009/12/02/fedora-mac-and-efi

Otherwise I won't even be typing this message in F13 right now.

Because of that I would suggest getting the Fedora Live CD for installing Fedora on Mac hardware, instead of using the DVD. The Live CD do come with an installer. So what I would do is to run the installer, but don't immediately reboot when Fedora 13 is successfully been installed, instead use the Live environment and open a Terminal to do the fix documented in the blog entry above.

Proprietary goodies

The Fedora project's policy is that everything they officially ships that runs on the CPU that are free software. It is great if you want to keep your computer free, and it felt rock solid when I was using it in a fresh install.

For installing propriety stuff, I've used EasyLife, it is just a list of checkboxes which I just tick a bunch of stuff that I wanted, and it goes and installs it all automatically using RPMFusion. I was watching YouTube and skype in no time!!

How it compares to Ubuntu

It does some things better and some things worse... isn't that the whole point of distros!? LOL.

Well 2 finger scrolling actually works! Right out of the box! This is the first big thing I noticed because I was trying to get it to work properly for months on Lucid Lynx to no avail, to the point I was actually not using the scrolling anymore on Ubuntu... so that's very exciting when I can finally read web pages using the trackpad.

WiFi drops out too, but seems to be more stable than it was on Ubuntu. While I was on Ubuntu I had to constantly restart the network-manager through the Terminal:

sudo service network-manager restart

I have not yet have any need to do so on F13... but we'll have to see for that as I use it more!

F13 comes with SELinux turned on by default. Security by default is a good thing, but it might prevents weird programs from running. If that said weird program is malicious, then well good that it can't run! But if it is legitimate and you really need it and SELinux is too protective, SELinux can be turned off using the EasyLife thing I mentioned aboe.

The wallpaper and login screen looks stunning compared to Ubuntu, but F13 still uses the ClearLooks window border that just isn't that amazing compared to Lucid Lynx's Mac like one. Now that isn't necesserily a bad thing, it is nice on eyes and nice for a rock solid workstation to do work on. Depends on what type of user you are and what you want out of a Linux system I guess.

Alright I think I have probably written a little too much now, might as well make a video later.

Subject: Refresh rate with KDE - by: riao

I'm using Linux Mint 9. Installed the KDE environment not too long ago and have found that my eyes become strained easily when I'm in that environment. I'm using 2 nVidia cards and I have configured the xorg.conf file so that I can select the proper refresh rate. Well, have a look at the screenshot:

The Nvidia settings you see are the correct ones. but in the system settings window for KDE, I can only select default,50.0,or 52 Hz for the refresh rate. I'm guessing that it's the KDE system settings that is choosing my refresh rate (it would explain the eyestrain I'm experiencing).

Anyone know how I can correct this?

Subject: So I am thinking of installing Ubuntu 10.04 - by: OrangeNinja

OK, I am a new user and so far I like what I see with ubuntu. I installed it as a duel boot on a HP dv6775 back in December 09. I have had some connection issues from time to time but I think it is very quick, and would like to learn more about it. That has me thinking that I might want to move up from my current 9.10 to 10.04.

But I was wondering could I do a fresh install and keep my home and swap etc? or should I just start over and redo the partitions? I was also kicking around the idea of doing a system restore on the windows side to free up more hd space and make my ubuntu partitions a little bigger. After using windows for a year it only allowed about 30 gigs to split between the partitions need for my Ubuntu install last time.

What do you all think? Any idears?

Hey everyone. First post! Woot! Anyway, I came across something earlier today when installing a daily build of the alpha of Maverick. I just thought you guys might get a kick out of it. Ubuntu truly is "linux for human beings" because I found some human error . I think this deserves a bug report, lol.

I was also trying to partition the disk with the new partitioner they have setup, which is gorgeous looking but is so simple that apparently I can't do anything :/ (i'm making a joke here fyi)

That's a bit of a problem, lol . Maybe brighten someone's day up.
Subject: Synchronising Tomboy Notes with Ubuntu One - by: quids

Tutorial: Synchronising Tomboy Notes with Ubuntu One
Distro: Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, Lucid 10.04, Maverick 10.10

First off get your Ubuntu One account setup. Its fairly straight forward to do and all the instructions are there when you go through Manage Account on Ubuntu One.

1. Open up your File Manager (Nautilus / Dolphin / etc) and navigate to "/home/you/Ubuntu One" which can also be written as "~/Ubuntu One"

2. Create a new folder called "Tomboy Notes"

3. Open Tomboy Notes

4. In the menu bar go to Edit --> Preferences --> Synchronisation

5. Choose Service "Local Folder" then select the folder path "~/Ubuntu One/Tomboy Notes"

Tomboy will automatically copy all of your notes to the Ubuntu One folder, which in turn gets synchronised with your Cloud storage on Ubuntu One.

You can use that same procedure to retrieve your notes when you use a different computer or reinstall everything on your current one.

Subject: Mint 9 Gnome With Kubuntu KDE backport - by: Moderate

Hey everyone, fairly new to the whole Linux distro scene.

I got a problem, I'm running Mint 9 Gnome, but in Tim's latest review

It shows him running Mint 9, but looks like Kubuntu 10 KDE. I was just wondering how to do this, because I think I want to stay with Mint, but I like the way Kubuntu KDE looks. Also, any other pointers and tips for a noob with Mint and Linux in general would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Subject: Multi Boot Grub2 / Boot loader ? - by: morbidj

I have a multi boot system all is functioning fine at the moment.
ATM my system is booting off linux mint 9 Grub2 boot loader with maverick and windows 7 as options.
My question is this that I will be reinstalling maverick RC3 and I am concerned as I want to keep the mint9 supplied grub2 boot loader as default opposed to the version that will replace it by the installation of Maverick.
Can the replacement be avoided? Can I revert back to the mint version after installation of maverick?

TIA

Subject: Well, hello there. - by: LinuxPanda

Well, I figured I might as well introduce myself. o:

I hail from Kentucky in the US. 19 in a month and have been using Linux for roughly two years. I started out with Xubuntu 9.04(Jaunty Jackalope) after being pestered by a friend on a text based game I played. Before that, I was using Windows XP like most people and realizing that it was fail. I started by trying to make windows xp faster by removing certain stuff I didn't need, including all of the stuff that make it look good. >.> Then I moved to Linux. In my short time with Linux, I have used Xubuntu, Ubuntu, Arch, Debian, SliTaz, and attempted to try Mandriva, only to find failure. I am using a Compaq presario with 256MB of ram and roughly 36GB of hard drive space.

I've ran into quite a few of Osgui's tutorials and screencasts on youtube when searching up random Linux stuff and found that I liked them. After a while(today), I decided to join the site and see what it was about. I look forward to learning more about Linux, eventually using Linux From Scratch and others.

Subject: Mounted smb share in fstab - by: riao

Hello. I have a question that I hope someone might be able to answer.

I've just entered a couple of lines into /etc/fstab to mount a couple smb shares at boot. here are the lines:

//192.168.0.106/storage   /home/riao/mnt/storage   cifs   username=***,password=***,_netdev,uid=client_user,gid=users   0 0
//192.168.0.106/audio   /home/riao/mnt/audio   cifs   username=***,password=***,_netdev,uid=client_user,gid=users   0 0

It does the job; the shares are mounted to the correct location and everything, but my network seems to be going completely ape-shit right now. Actually my linux box is downloading and the windows machine is uploading -- at nearly the maximum capacity of my network. Is the linux box just downloading everything from the share? What can I do to prevent this?

EDIT:

Okay what I've done now is to comment out one of the shares (storage) as it's 400+ GB and I didn't want to wait for that to pass through the network. The audio share is a little under 40 GB.

I noticed that even though it certainly appears that I'm d'loading Gig after Gig, the open space on my HDD is not changing. It's remaining at a steady 308.6 GB free. So is it some kind of indexing?

Anyway I'm going to just let it go waiting until the 40 Gig mark has passed. If the network calms down, I'll reboot and see what happens then.

Subject: SliTaz - A lightweight distro - by: LinuxPanda

Having just joined, I figured I would create a thread with a bit of my own knowledge. This one happens to be about a distribution called SliTaz GNU/Linux. SliTaz is a distribution formed solely for speed and ease of use. You can download the live cd image and burn it to a disc (It's only 30MB). For all of you out there that use Puppy Linux as a backup live cd, SliTaz will most definitely rival it. It is quite possible to install it on your hard drive as well. I found it a few weeks back when I was mucking around with Arch Linux. SliTaz uses Openbox as the window manager, Midori as the web browser and Tazpkg as the package manager. There are 2300 packages installable via the mirror. When I installed SliTaz on my hard drive, it took roughly 5 minutes, compared to the two hour installs of Ubuntu/Debian/Arch/etc.

If you are looking for desktop effects, SliTaz is not really for you. However, if you are looking for speed and/or bringing an old system back to life, you should take a look at this OS.

Just a note: SliTaz - Simple Light Incredible Temporary Autonomous Zone.

Subject: Logitech 350 Keyboard - by: quids

Hey TIm cool vid on the Logitech keyboard unboxing & review

Im so tempted to get one, It has all those multimedia keys which is what I'd like, but I don't think it has a Previous / Next track key. Infact I couldn't find any half decent reasonably priced ones that did.
Looks like it will match my glossy black logitech mouse

But I was wondering would it work if you swapped around the keyboard shortcuts in GNOME so something like volume up / down could do Previous / Next Track instead?
Don't suppose you could try it out please mate?

Cheers

Subject: Mint 9 Crashing - by: quids

Alright guys this one has me a bit puzzled

First off I successfully persuaded one of my work mates to give Linux a shot after he was complaining that Vista had become so slow on his laptop.
I got him to bring the laptop to the office, I did a quick fix for Vista (removed loads of OEM programs) and then installed 32bit Mint 9 GNOME to dual boot with Vista

Unfortunately I had to install it Offline, but it was working ok for an hour or so.
I told my mate to install all the updates when he put it on the internet at home. That all worked ok, until I got a phonecall today asking if I could sort out the email setup.

So I pop round and find that the computer has crashed. Couldn't do anything, the screen was stuck, and I couldn't even open TTY1
During the next hour or so while I was sorting out the email and showing some of the other features of Linux it crashed another two times

1 - While setting thunderbird
2 - Creating a shortcut on the desktop
3 - Burning a CD

Each time it was the same thing - the screen just froze. No error message, no oops, nothing!

I didn't get a good look at the specs, but it was an Acer laptop, Intel dual core 32bit 1.6Ghz CPU, 1Gb RAM, 120 Gb HDD, and Intel Graphics card (full worked with 3D effects)
All hardware fully worked no extra drivers or special config was needed on anything.

There hasn't been any Kernel updates on Mint 9 yet.

He's ok with it at the moment, but I know it won't take much to put him off Linux especially if it crashes in the middle of something important.

I was thinking I might be worth swaping to Ubuntu Lucid as thats got a more up to date kernel.
What do you all reckon?

Hi people. I am brand spanking new to Linux. I'm currently trying out both the Linux mint 9 Gnome and KDE flavours.

There are a million and one videos to watch and I've been on various sites.

Seeing as I'm brand new I don't have a feel for the variants of Linux and basically wanted to know what the main glaring differences are between Mint 9 Gnome and KDE.

Is it simply the look and maybe little things like Pidgin in Gome but Kopete in KDE?

I use my laptop for everyday browsing and university work. No real sophisticated work at the moment.

From looks alone and a little dabble w/ each, my heart is already w/ KDE but any help in making my decision would be much appreciated.

Subject: Messenger Client with Webcam Support - by: random0munky

Just to let you guys know, I posted this on justlinux.com also

I'm stumped as to how to get this to work. I want to enable webcam support so I'll be able to talk to people via webcam using linux (using Ubuntu 10.04). I've looked at some guides such as using Emesene messenger to no avail. Also I've tried to use Wine and install Msn Messenger 7.5, however I'm unable to type in my email address and password to login to the messenger client. I searched and read about installing some packages or whatever for wine to allow me to enter in text but to no avail. I've used the stable release of wine as well as the beta release for wine (by adding the deb url inside the software source list). I'm using empathy and there's a webcam icon next to my name under my gmail account, when I click that I can see myself just fine, but nobody can see that I have webcam support. =/ Any tips, hints, guides, direction..? I have an Asus Ul80vt and the webcam is a chicony something if that helps at all.

Thank You.

Hello Folks,

All the main operating systems are covered here I believe, except one "family".
The *BSD Family is not covered yet, or did I miss it being covered in the *nix section?
Such as FreeBSD, DesktopBSD, DragonflyBSD and PC-BSD being the top four I could think of off the top of my head.
I hope it gets a start up thread here. Because I will try to share as much as I can during my install/use/compiling of FreeBSD and some of it's ports.
So if you could toss us users a area for it. I know I would appreciate it very much.
I know there will be others that will be curious about the *BSD Family.

Subject: Changing the brightness - by: random0munky

Yay my second post. I have a troubleshooting question, if anybody can give any hints/advice/pointers about this. My current laptop is an Asus ul80vt and I'm having trouble changing the brightness in real-time on my laptop. What I mean by real-time is when you press the fn key combo it changes the brightness right then and there. What does happen is when I change the brightness, the brightness idicator comes up showing that I'm changing it, but once I restart the computer, the brightness setting is then applied. Which is wierd. There's been posts where this particular laptop has trouble with its brightness fn keys to work with ubuntu. I've found links on how to do it, however I come up unsuccessful. Here's some links:

www.linlap.com/wiki/asus+ul80vt look at the comments
slackblogs.blogspot.com/2010/02/some-asus-ul80vt-problem-solved.html

Just wondering if anybody has any other input on this matter.
Thanks

Subject: "UltraViolet" DRM strikes again!!! - by: drsunnz

"Throughout the relatively short history of DRM, we have seen various methods of user restriction come and go. Now, there is a new threat on the horizon: UltraViolet. A soon to be implemented DRM scheme, UltraViolet -- or should that be Ultraviolent -- is a joint effort between companies such as Sony, Adobe, Cisco, HP, Microsoft and Intel. What seperates UltraViolet apart from other types of DRM is its use of "the cloud." Whereas most other DRM schemes are implemented locally, UltraViolet intends to store the digital media you purchase on a centralized server with the goal of preventing users from storing their digital media on unauthorized devices, sharing and making copies."

Subject: CentOS, Windows Server 2008, LDAP = Yay - by: random0munky

Just in case you are subscribed to JustLinux.com, I've posted this in their networking section.

Btw Thx OSGUI for the invite. Love linux, have ubuntu 10.04 on its own partition on my laptop. The infamous Asus ul80vt. Don't know if this forum is advanced enough to take this type of question but here it goes. Btw here's the link I made to JustLinux.com just for reference. justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=153171

This will be my first thread, yay =)

Well my deal at the moment is to have linux boxes running CentOS 5 to talk to Windows Server 2008 using an active directory where all login authentication will be ran against the Window's active directory. There's also a thread, hosted by LuckMe where he stated to have the home folder via network (ssh) where all the linux boxes have a home folder but not local, but through the network. I'm really new to linux, but I've been edumucating myself with commands and how the structure of linux works, (using Ubuntu on my laptop).

I've been googlin the internet for documentation on how to accomplish this feat but was wondering if you guys have any tips/advice/links/awesome stuff to add to help me get started with this project. Thank You.

Subject: grub buisness - by: wallybescotty

ok im doing a duel boot, i had windows 7 on one HDD and linux mint 9 on another, it was working good, i was having a problem where everytime i pushed the A key on my keyboard thunderbird would pop up and the linux os would freeze, turns out it was my keybaord not the linux.

anyway i deleted the linux and everyone in one forum wigglez was reading said install the linux without the win HDD hooked up so i did, and it worked right after swapping keyboards, but then when i hooked the windows HDD up it weent to grub rescue, i forgot to delete the grub first

anyway i did a ( bootsect /nf60 c: /mbr ) and it fixed the windows. only now windows loads before the grub if i hit esc and go to boot priority and click the linux drive it loads perfect with the grub and the windows option works and everything.

anyone know how i can get the grub to load before the windows lol ive been up since yesturday and i have to finish all this tonight before i take my computer back home. i dont have internet at the moment hollar as soon as you can i'll be up till i figure it out, i was thinking maybe just reinstall the grub or swap the sata cables what does everyone thing?

ok i fixed it, everything is all good now, i did a sudo update-grub2 and then on my restart i went into my bios and found where i could change the loading priority of the HDDs so it works the way it should now lol hello mint 9

Subject: sid/sudux... - by: mauser1891

Hello Folks,

Forgive me for being blunt and to the point in this thread.
So those with timid and sensitive easily hurt feelings take care where you tread out there.

There is a reason why there are different development stages in Debian. There are different ports also. So when people speak of Debian GNU/Linux they need to be specific on stage and port. I have found out this to be true even on the Official Debian User Support Forum.
So even I must be careful on what I post on Debian, and be concise. As I have stated, "I am just another user".

Debian Ports.

Debian is an operating system (OS), not a kernel (actually, it is more than an OS since it includes thousands of application programs).

Debian Stable.
It's where people that need mission critical and rock stable packages go. Though there are a still few issues that should be reported considering that Debian has over 25,000 packages. And that any user can build their own packages from source code.

Debian Sid.
Isn't for the regular users there are certain things that just be accepted from using "unstable" packages, where some do use the term RTFM.
"sid" is subject to massive changes and in-place library updates. This can result in a very "unstable" system which contains packages that cannot be installed due to missing libraries, dependencies that cannot be fulfilled etc. Use it at your own risk!

sidux (no cap on the first letter).
Is an operating system based on the Linux kernel, Debian's most modern branch (called "Sid") and many free and open source applications. The core values and social contract of Debian are held.

It is worth noting, as sidux uses Debian's unstable branch and due to the very nature of 'Sid', you will need to be prepared to use the Terminal/cli.
With the 'way of sidux', you will be always up to date and have the very best that sidux together with Debian 'sid' can offer.
You no longer need to wait for a new release to always have the latest of anything, including kernels. Once you have installed sidux, followed by all your favourite programs/applications, all it needs is a dist-upgrade, which is a system-wide software update from debian and specialist packages from sidux.

But this is why this Forum is great. It has people with differing levels of skillsets with different distro's. Nor is it to large that new people get lost trying to navigate, which can easily happen in the main distro support forums.
That is why I am here. To best share what I can covering sidux/sid/Debian, and if a topic was beyond my own scope I would post a link to another site covering the particular topic/query.

Subject: iPod Touch Questions or Help? Post them here. - by: bp96

OK, i'm going to start with my questions :
I'm about to get the iPod Touch 8GB Late 2009 Edition soon but I need to know something. I'm running an earlier version of iTunes (9.1 to be more exact) on my netbook and I was wandering, because that version doesn't support the new iOS4, will it find the latest update that was released before iOS4? Which is iOS 3.1.3 (or is it 3.2.1 which is iPad only I think ) I'm asking because i've heard that iOS4 is very good but will make my model slower which I don't want

Any other tips that will help me such as battery saving tips, useful must-have apps, cleaning, how to hold it so the back doesn't get scratched if I don't have the case when I get it, how to prevent scratches etc.

Thanks

BTW, if you have an iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad and are a light sleeper (i.e. have trouble getting to sleep), check out the free app called White Noise Lite

As you might have seen I have been running Linux of a MacBook Pro.

But too bad some of the Apple hardware doesn't work very well with Linux, so I am thinking of getting an inexpensive laptop for trying out distro's.

IBM ThinkPads are said to be have good Linux support, so I have been looking for refurbs, here's something I've found:
Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this on, (I don't like the people over at the Ubuntu forums) but I've just installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my netbook, as a partition (along with gOS 3.1, which I am using at the moment). I installed it off of USB, and know I don't know what to do!
The track-pad isn't working, and I'm not sure how to connect to my wireless network!
I will remain persistent however, could anyone give me some help? It would be very appreciated!

I'm not a total noob though, I installed Puppy Linux 5 on a computer with less processing power than an iPhone!

Take a look at this:
Hey everyone

you should all check out Ubuntu Brainstorm

it is where we tell the Canonical developers what to focus on, besides bugs, like suggestions

brainstorm.ubuntu.com/

I added a few options to this one so far

brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/25308/

I am going to add many more suggestions to it, and I want everyone on this forum to register on that site and help with voting ideas up or down depending if you like them or not

Subject: moving grub to another partition - by: syncdram

Ok, i have a wired setup, i have 2 hard drives partitioned as such: Drive 1 first partition is /dev/sda2 second partition
on first drive is /dev/sda1. this is the way you see it looking at it in gparted.

Second hard drive partitions: /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb3 /dev/sdb5. now the boot loader is on the first hard drive on partition
/dev/sda1. I need to move the boot loader to /dev/sdb5 on the second drive is this possible? the reason is i'm tring to load wind 7 in orical virtual box 3.2 and i need to shut the first drive off because wind 7 is throwing a error. when i shut the first drive down i have no boot loader.

Subject: Mouse Problems---HELP! - by: bp96

My mouse has stopped working properly recently and this started happening all of a sudden. This is a hardware issue...My mouse keeps turning off and on randomly. By 'off' I mean the optical light and the light in the scroll wheel turn off and the mouse doesn't work as if the mouse is unplugged from the computer . If I try banging it against the table or if I change the wire/ mouse position it sometimes starts working again. This is happening on Linux and Windows on all of my computers...Any ideas?
